Practical Nursing: Advanced Standing

ADMISSION OF STUDENT WITH ADVANCED STANDING*

 

OBJECTIVE:

To admit a student with Advanced Standing who previously withdrew in good standing from a nursing program other than Kiamichi Tech Practical Nursing. The student admitted with advanced standing will be considered on an individual basis after evaluating the previous educational courses.

NOTE:  OKLAHOMA applicants with a criminal history of FELONY conviction(s), MUST obtain a determination of eligibility for licensure from the Oklahoma Board of Nursing and MUST submit a copy of the determination with their application. To obtain a Determination of Eligibility, the required form shall be obtained, completed, and filed with the Oklahoma Board of Nursing. The Oklahoma Board of Nursing does charge a fee for the Determination of Eligibility. The form can be accessed at https://oklahoma.gov/nursing/forms.html.

The Oklahoma Board of Nursing has the authority to deny a license, recognition or certificate; issue a license, recognition or certificate with conditions and/or an administrative penalty; or to issue and otherwise discipline a license, recognition or certificate to an individual with a history of criminal background, disciplinary action on any professional or occupational license or certification, or judicial declaration of mental incompetence [59 O.S. § 567.8]. These cases are considered on an individual basis at the time of application for licensure is made.

TO DETERMINE IF YOU QUALIFY FOR ADVANCED STANDING, PLEASE EMAIL YOUR SCHOOL TRANSCRIPT(S) TO practicalnursing@ktc.edu.  PLEASE INCLUDE A CONTACT PHONE NUMBER IN YOUR EMAIL.  PLEASE ALLOW 24-48 HOURS FOR A REPLY.

PROCEDURE:

  1. Submit the “PN Application for Advanced Standing” to the Practical Nursing Director.
  2. Admission of a student with Advanced Standing is considered if application is made within two (2) years from time of withdrawal from the nursing program.
    1. The student must have withdrawn in good standing.
    2. The student may be accepted for advanced standing only one (1) time within the two (2) years from time of withdrawal from previous program of study. Should the student then withdraw from the Kiamichi Tech Practical Nursing program, the student must complete the online “PN Application for Admission” and follow the same procedure as other applicants for consideration in either the full-time or part-time program, repeating the program in its entirety.
  3. The student admitted with Advanced Standing will be considered on an individual basis after evaluating courses at each school.
  4. Credit will not be given for “incomplete” courses, those taken by correspondence or through in-service education, or “on the job” training.
  5. Provision for receiving prior credit for courses clock/credit hours:
    1. Achievement of at least a score of 77% on challenge exams or equal experience on transcript from previous school of nursing. **Minimum grade of 77% must be reflected on transcript; otherwise, a minimum grade of “B” must be documented.**
    2. Clinical experience will be evaluated by the faculty utilizing criteria established for satisfactory performance in the skills laboratory and in the hospital clinical area.
    3. No student will be allowed to challenge the last level.
  6. A minimum of the last two (2) levels of the nursing program must be provided by Kiamichi Tech in order for a student to receive a diploma from the school.
  7. Advanced Standing Admission is contingent upon space availability.
  8. Orientation and review of the Practical Nursing Student Handbook will be completed within the first two (2) weeks of admission to the program.
  9. Advanced Standing may be granted based on submission of the following to the PN Director:
    1. PN Application for Advanced Standing
    2. High School transcript, GED scores, or HiSET scores
    3. High School Evaluation Results (ONLY for those who graduated high school outside of the United States)
    4. College, University, or Technical School transcripts
    5. Health-related Certificates or Card copies
    6. Letter-of-recommendation from the Director/Dean of Nursing from the nursing program attended
    7. Course Syllabi for previous courses from nursing program attended
    8. Criminal History Records Search results (results take approximately 3-5 days once order is processed and is the financial responsibility of the applicant)
    9. Determination of Eligibility results (ONLY for those with a FELONY conviction in the State of Oklahoma)
    10. Placement Exam Scores (must meet minimum-score requirements) – Contact your local Kiamichi Tech Campus to register for testing
    11. TOEFL Exam Scores (ONLY for International Applicants whose primary language is not English)
  10. If Advanced Standing is granted, then all general admission requirements of the Practical Nursing program shall be met by the applicant prior to the first day of the Level. These include the following:
    1. Furnish evidence of payment in full of tuition for the semester or admission
    2. Furnish verification of American Heart Association Healthcare Provider BLS certification that will not expire during the program **The American Heart Association training is required. Online CPR courses will not be accepted.**
    3. Furnish a record of immunizations meeting the Kiamichi Tech Practical Nursing program requirements.  See section 3.7 of the PN Student Handbook (found under the “Resources” tab), for current Immunization Guidelines.
    4. Furnish a legible copy of Driver’s License
    5. Furnish a legible copy of full form state certified Birth Certificate
    6. Interview with faculty and PN Director

*In general, an Advanced Standing student would be one who has completed and passed Introduction to Nursing, Anatomy & Physiology, Fundamentals of Nursing, and who has acquired some clinicals experience.
