A Steady Hand and a Servant’s Heart: How One Local Leader Stepped Up for Kiamichi Tech Students

When Kiamichi Tech’s Workforce and Economic Development Department suddenly found itself without an RN supervisor for its short-term healthcare training programs, momentum for many future healthcare workers was at risk. Students had completed their training and were preparing to test for state certification, but without an RN supervisor those plans were put on hold.
Then one community partner stepped in and changed the entire trajectory. Johanna White, owner of Visiting Angels of Durant, already leads a thriving living assistance agency serving seniors and veterans across Southeast Oklahoma. Yet when she learned that Kiamichi Tech needed immediate help, she did not hesitate. She rearranged her schedule, stepped into the supervisor role, and provided the support students needed to stay on track. Her commitment ensured that no student had to wait to test, and no future caregiver had their career delayed.
“Johanna jumped right in,” said Tori Culley, Workforce and Economic Development Coordinator at Kiamichi Tech - Durant. “We never want to be the reason a student has to wait to get certified. Johanna made it possible for us to get back on track.”
Johanna’s impact did not stop with oversight. She began visiting classes, hosting Q&A sessions, and sharing real-world insight that students eagerly absorbed. She talks openly about the realities of care, the heart required to serve others, and the opportunities available for those willing to learn and grow. Her passion comes from experience.
“I started my nursing career as a CNA,” Johanna said. “When I was approached about the need, I was excited to help students take the next step toward their certification. It felt like giving back to the place where it all began for me.”
Johanna’s involvement extends beyond mentorship. She hires Kiamichi Tech graduates as well. Many now work as caregivers with Visiting Angels, and she has complete confidence in the preparation they receive at Kiamichi Tech.
“I am always confident when I have a caregiver who trained at Kiamichi Tech,” she said. “They are prepared and they come into the job with confidence.”
Johanna’s trust in CareerTech training is more than a compliment. It is a model of what strong partnerships can accomplish.
Meeting a Critical Need in Southeast Oklahoma
Oklahoma’s senior population is expected to grow significantly in the next decade. That means the need for qualified caregivers and passionate instructors will only increase. Visiting Angels is already experiencing rapid growth, and Johanna knows that community partnerships like this one are essential to meeting the needs ahead.
“With the growth we are seeing, we need qualified caregivers to help seniors age in place,” she said. “Programs that prepare students well, along with people who are willing to support them, are critical.”
Johanna’s leadership is a powerful example of the difference one part-time instructor, supervisor, or industry expert can make. Her willingness to share her time, skills, and story did not just fill a gap. It changed lives, kept students moving forward, strengthened the local workforce, and ensured seniors in our region continue receiving high-quality care.
